The high cost of water

Lower Your Water Rates By Up To 25%

Water re-use program lowers rates 25 percent NEW YORK — Under the city's new Comprehensive Water Re-Use Program, property owners who install equipment that recycles their used water will see their water rate reduced by 25 percent, according to a New York Daily News story reported by The Miami Herald.

Under the program, buildings must have an onsite treatment system that captures wastewater and recycles it for use in toilets and other areas that do not require high-quality drinking water, the article stated.

The buildings also must have separate systems to store and treat rain runoff for nonpotable uses, as well as master water meters for the buildings and individual meters for tenants, the paper reported. In addition, property owners must install low-flow fixtures throughout the properties.

"By recycling used water onsite for nonpotable uses, the city can save on water delivery, maintenance and sewage treatment costs," DEP Commissioner Christopher Ward said in the article. "But more importantly, we'll drive down the total amount of water used in the city every day."
